What is the difference between Mobile-ID and an electronic signature?

Mobile-ID is a physical SIM-card based solution for personal identification. A similar identification tool is a Smart-ID app.

You can use Mobile-ID for online banking, access hundreds of e-services, self-service platforms, including many administrative and public e-services platforms.
Electronic signature, on the other hand, is a much more general term and has a much broader meaning. The regulation of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe [reik nuorodos] states three different electronic signature security levels:
  • Electronic signature - data in an electronic form that is connected to other data in an electronic form or logically linked to them and which the signatory uses when signing, for example, the name and surname in an electronic letter or a signature on a courier's tablet when picking up a parcel;
  • Advanced electronic signature - an electronic signature that meets the following requirements: associated with the signatory, created using electronic signature creation data that only the signatory can use with high reliability, associated with the signed data in such a way that any change to that data is detectable, in accordance with it is possible to identify the person signing it, for example, an unqualified Smart-ID;
  • Qualified electronic signature - an advanced electronic signature created using a qualified electronic signature creation device and verified by a qualified electronic signature certificate. When signing a document, you need to confirm your identity with some form of personal identity verification, such as a mobile signature, a qualified Smart-ID app, a USB stick, an ID card, etc.
